Yaroslavl

City and Population

In 2010, Yaroslavl will celebrate its 1,000-year anniversary. The city is a jewel in the famous "Golden Ring" - a string of beautiful medieval Russian cities around Moscow (Uglich, Rostov-the-Great, Suzdal and Vladimir). It boasts many well-preserved onion-domed churches and incredible views of the Volga River. The city centre of Yaroslavl is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Yaroslavl is located 250 kilometres northeast of Moscow. With a population of more than 600,000, this city holds a pre-eminent position at the intersection of several major highways, railways and waterways.

Sights

Football fans from all over the world will be able to discover and experience ancient and traditional Russia, in its purest form. The oldest theatre in Russia, the Volkov Theatre, is one of the landmarks of Yaroslavl, which also has the Spaso-Preobrazhensky (Transfiguration of the Saviour) Monastery and a number of ancient churches. In addition, a high number of higher education and academic institutions are located in this city.

Football

The pride of Yaroslavl's football community is FC Shinnik Yaroslavl, which plays in the Russian First Division. Among the 16,500 football players in the region who participate in the various football tournaments on all levels, 7,800 are registered within organised football.

Stadium

FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Yaroslavl is centrally positioned within the urban core of Yaroslavl, a city located at the confluence of the Volga and the Kotorosl Rivers. FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Yaroslavl will be built on the site of the home ground of the FC Shinnik Yaroslavl football team.

FAN FEST

The Strelka in Yaroslavl is situated at the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosl rivers and will serve as the site of the Yaroslavl Fan Fest. This headland is the extension of the most famous park in the city and a popular local recreation area.
